The Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) does not have a creed or statement of faith that members must subscribe to. The following four principles attempt to describe the basic beliefs held by most Friends who practice unprogrammed worship.
God calls each of us into a direct, personal, and unmediated relationship.
There is one, even Christ Jesus, who can speak to thy condition. – George Fox, Quaker (Journal, Nickalls, p11)
God calls the worshipping community into a direct, unmediated relationship.
For where two or three meet together in my name, I am there among them. – Jesus (Matthew 18:20 REB)
God is always revealing through God’s continuing presence.
But the advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything, and remind you of all that I have said to you. – Jesus (John 14:26 REB)
God calls us to live our faith in practice.
Like the lamp, you must shed light among your fellows, so that, when they see the good you do, they may give praise to your Father in heaven. – Jesus (Matthew 5:16 REB)The term “testimonies” is used to refer to our common set of deeply held, historically rooted convictions and way of living in the world. Testimonies bear witness to the Truth as Friends in community perceive it — Truth known through relationship with God.
